Station equipment (also known as 'station setup' or 'shack') in amateur radio refers to all the technical equipment, antennas and other aids that a radio amateur uses to transmit and receive on various frequencies. This equipment can vary greatly depending on the interests and needs of the radio amateur.
Typical station equipment includes
1. transceiver (transmitter/receiver)
- The central unit of the station, used for both transmitting and receiving radio signals on different frequency bands.
2. antenna
- One or more antennas specially tuned to the frequency bands on which the radio amateur operates. Antennas are available in various forms, e.g. dipoles, yagis or vertical antennas.
3. power supply
- A device that supplies power to the transceiver and other electrical equipment of the station, often with stabilised voltages.
4. microphone, headphones and loudspeaker
- Devices for voice transmission and reception, including headsets combining a microphone and headphones.
5. morse keyer
- For CW operation (Morse code), a Morse keyer is used to manually generate the characters.
6. computer
- Many radio amateurs use computers for transceiver control, digital signal processing (e.g. for operating modes such as PSK31, RTTY or FT8) and logging software to document communications.
7. tuner
- A device that adjusts the antenna to operate efficiently at the desired frequency, especially when the antenna is not perfectly tuned to the frequency.
8. measuring devices
- SWR meters, wattmeters and other meters used to monitor signal strength, output power and antenna tuning.
9. additional filters
- Devices used to suppress interference or improve reception quality, such as bandpass or notch filters.
10. software
- Software for digital modes, logbook management, propagation prediction and antenna design.
This equipment enables radio amateurs to communicate worldwide in different modes and on different frequencies, to carry out experimental radio projects and to participate in amateur radio contests.
