A digital contest in amateur radio is a competition in which radio amateurs try to make as many contacts as possible using digital modes. Unlike voice (SSB) or Morse (CW) contests, digital contests use special computer programs to transmit and decode signals.
What are digital modes?
Digital modes convert voice or text information into digital signals, which are then sent over the radio. These modes use different modulation and coding techniques to transmit data over radio waves. Examples of digital modes used in contests include
- RTTY (radioteletype): One of the oldest digital modes, specialising in the exchange of text messages.
- PSK (Phase Shift Keying): A narrow band digital mode that is very efficient in its use of bandwidth.

Objectives of a digital contest
The main objective of a digital contest is to make as many digital radio contacts (QSOs) as possible in a given period of time. Contestants exchange certain information, such as call sign, location, signal reports and other specific information, and log these contacts.
The procedure for a Digital Contest is as follows
- Preparation: Before the contest, contestants set up their radios and computers, configure the software, and test the connection between the radio and the computer. Programs such as N1MM+, WSJT-X, FLdigi or MMTTY are often used.
- Start the contest: The contest begins at a predetermined time, and contestants begin making QSOs. Unlike SSB or CW contests, the call is usually made automatically by the software.
- Exchange of information: During a digital QSO the following information is exchanged
- Call sign: The unique identification of the radio station.
- Signal report: A standardised report, e.g. RST (Readability, Signal Strength, Tone).
- Locator or serial number: Depending on the competition, a location (such as Maidenhead Locator) or a serial number will be exchanged.
- Points and multipliers: As in other contests, participants receive points for each QSO. Multipliers may also be used depending on the number of different countries, zones or other categories.
- Strategy: Strategy is also important in digital contests. This may include working certain bands or taking advantage of periods of good propagation.
- Logbook maintenance: All QSOs must be accurately recorded. The software used stores the connections, and after the contest the logbook is sent to the organisers for evaluation.

- Software proficiency: Contestants must have a good understanding of the software used to work efficiently.
- Efficient band usage: Digital modes are often narrowband, allowing many stations to operate in a small space. This requires precise frequency selection and coordination.
